It would be a good idea to disable automatic driver download on your PC. No Male to Male or Female to Female DB-9 adaptors needed to log with palm USB to Serial adapter will be needed if your computer does not have a serial port. The cable with just the bare pin requires you to look under the dash and plug into the correct pin on the car side of the connector. As recently as yesterday, FTDI has requested more data from me on this issue. The ALDL cable with the male OBD1 connector shell will allow you to just feel under the dash and plug the cable in. Timm Bacher of RDR and I are both aware of the issues with the FTDI parts and have both been in contact with FTDI regarding a solution (). The Red Devil River cable uses an FTDI device that is at least one year old (probably) and comes with an older driver that is required to use because a newer one from FTDI will not work. Not saying Gary is wrong at all but I personally haven't had any of the above mentioned issues. I had luck with the OBD1.5 (16 pin to usb) cable from Red Devil River but not the regular OBD1 to usb.
